Fibrin is a Brand Trade Name of a company in the North of England
manufacturing a polyester fibre to entrained and used in all
cement mixes, whether it is for the cement rendering of an entire
house, or just a simple Koi Pond ... the sheer strength that
Fibrin can afford to the finished job is totally immense .. and we
have been using and selling Fibrin now for many years ...
It is now produced under two main
brand names - Cemfibre or Adfil .... the actual name of the
Manufacturing Company who used to trade entirely under the brand
name of Fibrin.
It is very easy to mix and apply
with any cement rendering or other cement work where strength and
non crackability is of paramount importance.
In this first
section we shall primarily discuss 'ADFIL'
Technical Advantages
Adfil Fibres can be incorporated into any cementitous product to give the following benefits: -
1. Plastic Stage
a) Inhibits plastic shrinkage and settlement cracking.
The addition of Adfil fibres increases the tensile strain capacity of the concrete during the plastic stage giving the concrete increased intrinsic strength. The rate of bleed water is reduced allowing for proper hydration to take place, thus inhibiting plastic shrinkage and settlement cracking.
2. Hardened Stage
a) Increased impact resistance.
Most concrete is considered to be brittle, however the inclusion of Adfil fibres improves the ductility of concrete due to the high energy absorbed in de-bonding, stretching and pulling out of the fibres after the cement matrix has cracked.
b) Increased abrasion resistance.
The ability of Adfil fibres to control the bleed water migration in a concrete mix reduces the possibility of segregation of the fine cement and sand particles. This results in an efficient hydration of the cement, and combined with the improved bonding of the matrix achieves a tougher more durable concrete surface.
c) Improved fire resistance.
Adfil fibres within a cement matrix will melt at approximately 154 C creating millions of voids, allowing for the dispersal of moisture within the matrix when subjected to high temperatures. This will significantly reduce explosive spalling. In fact, of all the tests completed to date, spalling has been eliminated.
d) Improved water and chemical penetration resistance.
Reduced permeability is achieved by reducing the number of bleed holes in concrete. The subsequent improvement in near surface absorption causes water, chemicals and dirt to be absorbed more slowly.
e) Frost resistance.
Concrete entrained with
Fibrin 23 or
Crackstop improves the frost resistant characteristics of concrete and may be considered to give the equivalent durability, as air-entrained concrete
f) Secondary reinforcement.
Adfil fibres may be considered as an economic alternative to crack control Steel Mesh, normally placed in the upper section of a conventional ground bearing floor slab. It cannot replace any structural steel. When concrete shrinks, the crack control mesh is subjected to compression, increasing the tensile stresses in the concrete. The mesh is only under tension and of any value after the concrete has cracked, whereas Adfil fibres will inhibit cracking.
Adfil fibres are inert and do not adversely effect any known admixture.
