| Aquarium Cleaning and Tank
Maintaining..... Keeping fish
whether it be Cold water fish, tropical fish, marine fish or
Koi in the out side pond is an enjoyable hobby that many of
us have, but there are aspects of the hobby which can put us
off a little.....Cleaning and Maintaining....
Cleaning your aquarium does not have to be
a gruelling job that you push to the back of your mind, as
long as you have the right filtration working on your tank
then it is only the minimal cleaning that needs to be done
on a regular basis.
Just think...A regular Clean will result
in hours of satisfaction when you are watching your fish....
We recommend that you clean your aquarium
every 2 weeks particularly if your tank is fully
stocked...if you have less of a fish stocking level then you
may manage every 3 weeks....only you knows how dirty your
tank is.
Tank Cleaning...Get
Into The Habit...
- Try to clean the tank every 2
weeks.
- Remember to do a water change
when you clean....Usually 10-20% is adequate...'If
you do miss a clean don't try to do a larger
water change all in one go as this may result in
water problems in the tank.'
- When topping the tank up
after cleaning always remember to use a water
conditioner -
Stress Coat
is most popular.
- Remember to use the correct
piece of cleaning equipment for each part of
your tank...inside and out.
- Never use any chemical or
soap to clean your aquarium, or any thing which
goes in your aquarium....
| Getting
Started.....
There are lots of different pieces of
equipment available on today's market but
don't just go out and buy...think about what
you need carefully...Things you need to
consider when purchasing cleaning equipment
are:
- Is Your Aquarium
Glass or Acrylic?
- Do you have Gravel or
Sand?
- Is your Background
Pre Formed 3D or Just Backing Sheet?
Other than the tools you
will require there are bits of Equipment
that you will also need that you may not
have thought of...
- A bucket to remove
the water when cleaning...this is
usually done with the gravel/sand
cleaner....You can then use the bucket
to add the replacing conditioned water.
(Please note...do not use the leaning
bucket that you use to mop the floor -
Think of the chemicals that will have
been in there! Buy a new Bucket and
stick a label on it 'Aquarium Bucket
Only').
- Old Sheets or Some
towel, these are especially important
with the larger aquariums but it
is always advised that they are put down
when you are cleaning your aquarium...it
will save you flooring!
- Replacement Media For
the filtration....Whether it be sponges
or new carbon for the filter make sure
you always have these in your "Aquarium
Cleaning Kit" just in case...
- Water
Conditioner...Always have plenty in the
Cupboard because this is some thing that
you will need every time you clean the
aquarium....
